Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma and Chief Minister Nabam Tuki conveyed warm greetings to people of Arunachal Pradesh on the auspicious occasion of Christmas and expressed hope that the joyous occasion will spread universal love, harmony and oneness amongst the people of the State.

Governor wished that this Christmas bring the choicest of blessings and a spirit of happiness to Arunachal Pradesh. In his message, Tuki said "let us welcome Christmas with fresh and new thoughts of hope and cherish each moment as a blessing of inspiration".

The very essence of this day teaches us the value of kindness, the importance of love, and the significance of faith. Faith makes all things possible, hope makes all things work and love makes all things beautiful.

Lord Jesus Christ preached to spread the message of universal love among the mankind and taught us to accept every being in its real stage notwithstanding of their caste, creed or gender differences. On this auspicious occasion, I call upon my brothers and sisters to share the values and preaching of Lord Jesus for destroying the greatest foe of human being "hatred" for a celestial living on earth.

I also extend my heartiest warm wishes to all my people for a peace, happy and prosperous Happy New Year 2014, the message further added.

Rev. Dr. John Thomas, the Bishop of Itanagar also extended Christmas greetings to all the people of Arunachal Pradesh. In a message, he said, "Christmas calls to mind the birth of a person who pleaded for universal brotherhood. In our own times we have seen how the world paid tribute to Nelson Mandela for espousing the same principle. The African leader became the voice of the voiceless blacks who were denied equality. It is for each one of us to see if in our own milieu if there are voiceless people craving for attention and justice. Are not the minor children condemned to be domestic servants searching for a Mandela to liberate them?"

May this Christmas, which reminds us of the Child called Jesus, inspire us to be a voice for the voiceless children!"

Reading sessions cheer children in remote Anjaw

HAYULIANG, Dec 24: The harsh mountainous terrain and the biting cold of winter, with electricity remaining a rarest luxury, make life quite depressing in the remote pockets of Anjaw district, even for a determined adventure-seeker. Thus the school life of a child in these hills appears quite uninspiring and so misplaced. Hence it was a refreshing experience for school students and teachers in the Dalai valley Chaglagam sector, when the DDSE (SSA) Anjaw organized a Reading Promotion Campaign from Dec 16 to 21 to help them discover the joy of reading.

Inaugurating the campaign organized jointly with the Lohit Youth Library Network, at Hayuliang, P Tayeng, Principal, Govt. Hr Sec School Hayuliang outlined the vital importance of reading for senior students, to take up the challenges of life in the 21st century.

Addressing a packed audience of students, teachers and SSA officials, he exhorted them to develop their reading habits and language proficiency, by making full use of the school and public libraries in their locality. "You can achieve this only by extensive reading, covering various genres of books", he said. He also lauded the spirited efforts of the Lohit Youth Library reader-activists in promoting reading habits among remote villages with little library facilities.

Commencing the campaign with a book-talk, the Coordinator, Lohit Youth Libraries focused on bringing out the joy of reading, introducing a variety of books, literary forms and reading styles. Books like 'Alice in Wonderland', 'James and the Giant Peach', 'The Cat in the hat' and Swami & Friends continue to cheer generations of readers, while authors like Earnest Hemingway, Ruskin Bond, and Dr. Seuss inspire us to read more and more. He also conducted sessions of recitations from Jack Prelutsky, Lewis Carrol, Ogden Nash and Edward Lear, to the great delight of the students. The recitation by students from Mary Ann Hoberman's 'You read to me, I'll read to you' clearly brought out how students can be motivated to enjoy poetry and language.

The book exhibition highlighting reader-friendly titles from the NBT, CBT, Eklavya, Earthcare and the Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai was enthusiastically welcomed by the students and teachers. A Book Quiz, a creative-story writing contest and a painting contest was also organized for students of class VI -XII at Hayuliang.

The campaign covering primary and middle schools at Metengliang, Chaglagam, Taflagam, Mailiang, Chipru and Manchal - all remote villages - was headed by Akhriso Ngadong, BRC Coordinator, representing DDSE Anjaw.

Addressing students and teachers at all the venues, he reminded them that the life in Anjaw hills was much harsher than today, as the students then had to walk long hours and overcome several obstacles and stiff opposition from parents to go to schools. Yet today Anjaw has produced several doctors, engineers and educated professionals. Ngadong exhorted them to concentrate foremost in their studies, while supporting their parents in farming and household chores.

The campaign sessions included reading sessions, story-telling demonstrations, vocabulary quiz, and recitation training, from a variety of books. It was a thrill to students, teachers and the many villagers who gathered at the open-air sessions, as several young volunteers read or recited passages from the books under the guidance of the Library Coordinator. The Manchal Middle school students, most of them in their clean white uniforms, waiting eagerly on a late December Saturday for the sessions, spoke volumes for the enthusiasm of the teachers and the learning tempo of the school. No wonder, the students enthusiastically have asked for a full 2 days reading workshop at Manchal. It was also refreshing to see the colourful books from the new 'Library Corner' provided to all primary and middle schools in Arunachal this year by the SSA HQ.

The glow on the faces of the children at the end of each session at every venue, could be a rich and memorable reward to the DDSE SSA team, for launching such an unusual educational campaign to these hamlets, hardly visited by any guest.

DDSE Anjaw, K. Perme has offered to extend all support to the Lohit Youth Library Network to continue the campaign to other parts of Anjaw.

The Christmas - A spiritual perspective

Prof. (Dr.) Jayadeba Sahoo

The Christmas tree as we know it today started as a tradition in 16th Century Europe and is now a universal symbol for this holy time of year. Let's look at the deeper significance of some of the elements that go to make up the Christmas tree.

The depiction of a tree as a metaphor for life is one that occurs innumerable times in many cultures, ancient civilizations, mythology, and various faith traditions. As the 'Tree of Life' it can represent the 'family of humanity' - all the leaves representing the souls of the earth living together as one; as the variety of religions - each 'branch' emanates from the same seed and trunk; and the eternal flow of life is implicit in the question: Which came first, the seed or the tree?

The Christmas tree is wonderfully decorated with ornaments of all kinds, reflecting the beauty and uniqueness of each human being in the world.

What brings the whole tree to life are the lights. Each one of us is like a light on the tree, with a potential to shine light to the world, once the soul is lit by the Eternal Flame of Truth. How alive and bright is your light?

At Christmas, an evergreen tree is always used, reminding us that life is not just the here and now, but it is eternal. The seed of any tree is hidden deep below, it does its work silently, unseen, and yet from it springs the whole miraculous creation with its beauty and diversity and its different functions; the roots, branches, twigs, leaves and ultimately, its fruit. Again, the seed is a symbolic reminder of the Supreme Seed, One Almighty who is the Creator of all.

And at the top of the tree we often find a star, the One light that stands over all creation, the One that we will ultimately go back to. It also represents the sign of the nativity, of new life, new hope, when the 'Light of the World' brings newness… light into the dark world.

Angels abound at Christmas time. Messengers of God, embodiments of pure consciousness, they remind us of the highest virtues to which we should all aspire. Angels always have wings to remind us to stay light and keep our thoughts elevated and beyond the earthly plane. An angel's feet never touch the earth, they are eternally conscious of who they are, spirits, rather than matter. So too, we should remember our divine nature, and not simply be engrossed in all things physical. Angels are shown as neither male nor female, but an embodiment of all masculine and feminine qualities, such as courage, power and steadfastness; and benevolence, love and loyalty.

We are all acutely aware that we are going through a dark period in the world right now, where corruption, violence and peacelessness are in their most extreme form. Yet the message of Christmas persists: Peace and Love. We live in hope and with certainty.

It's interesting that, at the most difficult times in our lives the light of the Supreme, if we are mindful of it, seems to us brighter and more attractive than ever. Likewise, at this darkest time of the world, God's gifts are unlimited and on offer to each of us, if we only have eyes to see, and the heart to grasp the opportunity.

Locked within the soul is a memory of that brilliance that we came from. Perhaps this is how the myth of Santa Claus arose: a memorial of the One who comes to us at our darkest times, laden with treasures: Peace love and happiness to name just a few. Surely this is that time when our consciousness is being enlightened and a new age is dawning.

It's time …at this time of Christmas, no matter what your religion, to see the beauty and joy of the light of each one, the eternal tree of humanity, the abundant spiritual gifts as a reflection of the generosity of the Supreme. Make sure your light is lit, accept the gifts from the Divine and put them into practice. Then 'Goodwill to all Mankind' can truly be proclaimed in the world!

On this auspicious occasion of 'Christmas', take a moment for deep spiritual introspection and free yourselves from the bondage of greed, the lust for power and a slave of promiscuity and make God your eternal companion for true peace, happiness and prosperity. Nobody seem to care

Dear Editor,

The people of Bilat Circle are lacking a real leader, who will work for the development of the land. The true leader should understand the agony without any utterance by his people. Frankly speaking, the political leaders of that area don’t understand the meaning of the word “LEADER”. In my opinion, leader is to lead the people to light and to live and die for the betterment of the people.

Many people have written about the dilapidated road conditions of Ruksin-Mikong Mirem (RMM) road. But nobody is moved by such the letters. Even our CM is also a mere reader of the page “Readers Forum.” In spite of repeated writings, I am curious to know about CMs concern for the people of 37th Pasighat, West Constituency.

Moreover, we the citizen should not always lay our grievances before our local MLA. He knows the condition of the road very well. Even though, he is in the opposition seat, he should have revealed once to CM about condition of said stretch of road. In my knowledge CM will certainly see no friend or foe in the developmental activities.

Decades have passed but no action has been initiated from the government. Now, I am confused whom shall we ask for the development of the area, as nobody hear the lamenting cry of the poor’s.

Yours,

Johny Messar

Some unanswered questions

Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd (PHHL)  yesterday resumed its passenger services between Naharlagun, Guwahati and Tawang after a gap of 31 months. The service will operate twice a week on Monday & Friday between Naharlagun, Guwahati and Tawang. It is to be mentioned that the state government had resumed the PHHL chopper services in January 2013 which was flagged off by Chief Minister Nabam Tuki at Naharlagun helipad. However, the services had been introduced only for eastern sectors in Naharlagun-Guwahati and Naharlagun-Mohanbari.

The Pawan Hans helicopter services in Tawang sector had remained suspended from May 5, 2011 following two back-to-back crashes of its choppers in that year.  In the first accident on April 19, 2011, the MI-172 helicopter with 23 persons on board flying on the Guwahati-Tawang sector crashed at Tawang helipad while landing killing 17 persons, while the other occurred at Luguthang near Tawang on April 30, 2011 had claimed the lives of five, including the then Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu. The government of Arunachal had banned Pawan Hans service for sometime following death of late CM.  At that time questions were raised regarding safety norms adopted by PHHL. However, now same company is being allowed to operate in Arunachal.  Government should let public know, why they went back to PHHL despite its poor safety record?
